Daniel Kiener was born in Gmunden, Austria. After his school leaving examination as an industrial engineer and his military service he studied materials science at the University of Mining in Leoben, Austria. He got his PhD in the field of small scale mechanics and subsequently had Postdoc positions at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich and at UC Berkeley. Currently, he works at the Erich Schmid Institute in Leoben on in situ nanomechanics.
