Hamburg is the place where Simon Stellmer learnt to walk, to count and to write. After school, he juggled a career on the German national rowing team with the studies of physics. And as the years passed by, he spend more time in the lab than on the water, eventually trading the maritime hometown for mountainous Innsbruck, a stronghold of quantum physics. In the lab, he constructs machines to study the behaviour of clouds of atoms at temperatures only a few billionth of a degree above absolute zero. Exciting things happen at this ultracold regime! Some of his Firsts include the first generation of long-lived dark solitons, the first observation of their interaction, and lately, the first generation of a Bose-Einstein Condensate of Strontium.
