In the course of his degree studies on food- and biotechnology, Johannes Stadlmann became very much interested in plant-biotechnology. Using and "training" plants in order to produce medicine, is a fascinating idea! After having finished his diploma thesis in this field, he decided to get more involved and continued to explore the potential of this rather new technology. For his PhD in the European Research Project Pharma-Planta, however, he "changed sides" and set out to have a more detailed look on the pharmaceutical products derived from genetically engineered plants. Personally, this time provided him with the valuable experience that analytical biochemistry (which he never really liked during his studies!) is an exciting field of research; and actually, a fun thing to do! Naturally, scientists have very little free time. Nevertheless, whenever he finds the time for it, he enjoys modern-art exhibitions, going to the cinema, and - most importantly - relaxing over a nice cup of coffee and some life-style magazine in one Vienna's many coffee-houses.
