Jürgen Mairhofer (*1980) was raised in Upper Austria (Mühlviertel, Rohrbach District). In 1999 he moved to Vienna and started to study Food- and Biotechnology at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (BOKU). He earned his diploma degree in 2006 and subsequently, started his PhD studies. Both, his diploma- and PhD-thesis, were dedicated to the development of an antibiotic-resistance free plasmid production system for gene therapeutic and DNA vaccine applications. Using this system he has been able to produce plasmids that do no longer contain antibiotic resistance genes, representing a significant improvement in human gene therapy concerning safety and potency of those plasmids. He finished his PhD in 2010 and is currently working for the Austria Center of Industrial Biotechnology.
