Shanaka Herath was born in Sri Lanka. He obtained an honours degree in economics from University of Colombo, Sri Lanka before completing a master's degree at Carnegie Mellon University on a scholarship received from the Commonwealth Australia. As an undergraduate student, Herath won the Award for the Best Paper in South Asia at The First Conference for Students of Economics from South Asia in India. He subsequently served in a couple of research positions in NPO's and in a visiting lecturer position at the University of London External System. Herath moved to Austria in 2008 to pursue doctoral studies in socioeconomics at WU. His research interests as a research assistant at the Research Institute for Spatial and Real Estate Economics include real estate economics, urban economics and economic growth.
