Born in Lower Austria, Matthias Hackl moved to Vienna from Amstetten in 2003. In 2006 he finished the Bachelor programme Food Science and Biotechnology at BOKU University and enrolled in the Biotechnology Master programme. From 2006-2009 he spent 9 months in the United States to take courses and to do lab research for his master's thesis, which he submitted in Spring 2009. After gaining experience in applied functional genomic research at Prof. Grillari's lab, he started his PhD research in the group of Prof. Nicole Borth in late 2009 to work on optimization of recombinant cell lines.
